Mardi Gras is such a special time in New Orleans! This year, Mardi Gras day (Fat Tuesday) falls on Feb. 9. Mardi Gras, is made up of parades and merriment of the Carnival celebrations, beginning on or after the Christian feasts of the Epiphany (Three King's Day) and culminating on the day before Ash Wednesday (Fat Tuesday). The celebration reflects the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season.

Many people believe that Mardi Gras is all about drinking in the streets and vulgarity. While that is true in some parts of the city, it is really a family event that children can enjoy! For years, my family & I have "tailgated" along the parade routes waiting for parades to pass by. Using this time to catch up with family members, eating fried chicken along the route and watching the kids run around on a sunny, mild, winter day.
